My Hero Academia-Style Attack VFX in Unreal Engine 5

Seven post-process materials, appearing for one frame each, allow for a neat anime-like result.

Ryan Pergent, an experienced Game Developer and Combat Designer, continues working on anime-like 3D visual effects by unveiling the incredible results of his latest experiment with black-and-white impact frames in Unreal Engine 5.

Inspired by the My Hero Academia series, the effect comprises seven post-process materials, each appearing for one frame over a span of 12 frames, with some repetitions to create a convincing result. According to Ryan, the effect is currently WIP and will be available as a downloadable asset once it is refined and made more customizable.

"My approach to it was to look for anime references and try to reproduce what I liked about it," commented the creator. "I used several post-process materials for it. I can't really explain how each material works though, because it's quite complicated.

Earlier, Ryan also shipped Dynamic Smears, a cool UE5 plug-in that adds manga-like ghosting motion effects with full customization, a great way to convey speed and power. The add-on enhances not only animations but all types of motions, broadening the scope of its impact across your game with its versatile application. Utilizing a material function that can be easily plugged into any existing material, Dynamic Smears also streamlines the implementation process and ensures compatibility.
