"What Are You Doing": SEGA Is as Confused about Google Play's Sonic Post as We Are

I thought April Fool's Day passed already.

It can be hard to keep all your facts straight when you have to deal with a lot of information from all kinds of games, but my jaw dropped when I saw this bizarre Sonic thread from Google Play, and so did SEGA's.

A couple of days ago, Google Play posted a tweet saying "Sonic, but as you scroll he gets older and older." It was followed by a string of images with short messages, and the first thing you'll notice is that Sonic is not, in fact, getting older but "growing", at least based on the captions.

The weirdest thing is that you'll quickly see that the pictures have nothing to do with the dates and were seemingly picked at random. For example, the 1991 Sonic is actually from the 2013 mobile game. How do I, not a fan of the franchise, know this? Because every post in this thread is filled with community notes meant to point at incorrect information. Spoiler alert: all of it is false.

Some notes even try to find an explanation for Google Play's unhinged behavior. The 1993 Sonic is actually from Sonic Boom, "which released in 2014, not 1993. It is possible that Google Play have confused it for the game Sonic CD, which did release in 1993 and contains a song called Sonic Boom."

So odd was the thread that the official Sonic the Hedgehog account commented asking, "What are you doing." Some users think the posts were AI-generated, although it still doesn't explain everything that's going on there.

Whatever the case, the thread still exists, strangely enough. Find it here and join our 80 Level Talent platform and our Telegram channel, follow us on InstagramTwitter, and LinkedIn, where we share breakdowns, the latest news, awesome artworks, and more.
