A preview campaign of Ion Maiden is now available on Steam through early access, according to its developer 3D Realms. The thing is that the game is being developed with the help of the 22-year-old Build engine used to create previous 3D Realms games from the 90s, like Duke Nukem 3D and Shadow Warrior.

What’s really special about it is that it’s built on the 90s era Build engine. So it’s not like Unreal or Unity, dumbed-down to look retro. It is a retro engine, retrofitted to run on modern hardware.

A prequel to Bombshell is being created in a collaboration with the team of Voidpoint.

It is worth mentioning that the Dallas-based studio has been under the ownership of Danish investment firm SDN Invest and investor Mike Nielsen since 2014.

Ion Maiden is a throwback to classic shooters, a spiritual successor to Duke Nukem 3D. It doesn’t impersonate a ’90s game. It is a ’90s game.

We wanted to make it as authentic as possible, but we didn’t want to limit it to the 1990s. We are bringing 3D Realms back to its roots. Scott Miller told us that this game should feel like it was built in Texas in the 1990s. It will have a classically illustrated cover.
