3ds Max 2020.2 Revealed

Autodesk has launched 3ds Max 2020.2 which brings a new SketchUp importer and new display options for the viewport background.

Autodesk has launched 3ds Max 2020.2 which brings a new SketchUp importer and new display options for the viewport background. Also, it brings an update to the Chamfer modifier.

First, there’s the new SketchUp importer which supports versions of SketchUp past 2014. It is now possible to import SKP files created in current versions of SketchUp correctly. Also, there are options to control how objects are grouped, and the ability to specify the up axis for the scene.

The update features a new Synchronize With Display Mode setting for the viewport which means that if an environment image has been set, 3ds Max uses it as the viewport background to show assets in context. Please note that if the environment is black, 3ds Max displays a color gradient. You can also set the background to the environment, gradients or solid colors manually.

What is more, image-based lighting is now used automatically when an environment is added to a scene, so there’s no need to add a skylight.
