A Look at Lumberyard’s New Atom Render Engine

Check out the new physically-based render engine coming to Lumberyard.

Amazon shared a look at Atom, their new physically-based render engine in Lumberyard. The engine is said to be available to test this year. The team promises a modular, data-driven design and describes it as "more performant across a wide variety of scenarios, including and beyond gaming".

Amazon noted that Atom has been in development for over three years. It is said to be a "high-performance physically based renderer" featuring a highly modular design.

It’s said to be entirely data-driven and users can define "almost every feature and configuration" using JSON files. Atom will feature support for the DirectX, Vulkan, and Metal graphics APIs. The current release can be used on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, but the team plans to add support for more platforms.

As for shading, the new engine uses AZSL (Amazon Shading Language), Amazon’s extension of DirectX’s HLSL. Learn more about Atom here
