A New Model For High-Resolution Daytime Changes

A team of researchers from Russia revealed their new model for changing daytime in high-resolution photos.

Changing daytime in high-resolution photos or re-rendering scenes under different illuminations typical for different times of the day is not an easy task, and many researchers are working on a method that could allow changing daytime in a believable manner. 1Samsung AI Center in Moscow, Higher School of Economics, and Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology have recently presented their high-resolution daytime translation (HiDT) model that can deal with this challenge.

HiDT is said to combine a generative image-to-image model and a new upsampling scheme that let a user apply image translation at high resolution. The team states that the new model "demonstrates competitive results in terms of both commonly used GAN metrics and human evaluation. Importantly, this good performance comes as a result of training on a dataset of still landscape images with no daytime labels available."
