The creator aimed to turn the eerie atmosphere of Soviet trains into a full-fledged horror experience.
Lead 3D Artist Eugene Astakhov, who specializes primarily in creating realistic environments using Unreal Engine, has unveiled an impressive horror game prototype set in the realistic-looking cars of a typical Soviet-era train.
Inspired by the author's memories of traveling in similar trains, the project aimed to capture their unique eerie atmosphere and turn it into a full-fledged horror experience with an authentic soundscape, which was set up by using ambient sounds recorded in an identical train. According to the project's description, the creator utilized a variety of software to produce the prototype, including 3ds Max, Maya, Blender, Substance 3D Painter/Designer, Megascans, Quixel Mixer, Marmoset Toolbag, Unreal Engine 5, and more.
"I paid close attention to each environmental detail, music, and ambiance as well as atmosphere of each individual cart," commented the artist. "Additionally I practiced conventional psychological horror techniques and blended realistic scenes with disturbing fiction. Used a male character model by Starlight Arts in some screenshots for a more refined sense of scale."
