J. Todd Coleman and Gordon Walton, known for Shadowbane and Ultima Online, have opened a new studio ArtCraft Entertainment. The company is going to redefine the whole genre of MMO. Pretty ambitious.

Artcraft Entertainment is based in Austin. This city is considered to be one of the biggest game development hubs in USA. There are tons of talented experts, who will definitely make the studio even stronger. Artcraft CEO Coleman managed to recruit a real full stars team. He thinks that the company has enough potential to completely change the MMO-landscape with fresh and innovative online games.

Unfortunately there isn’t much information about this company. There is a website with a powerful manifesto and a humble registration page. Developers are tired of dumb quests and meaningless experience points. Instead of making old-school mechanics, the company aims at revolutionary experiences with competitive player interactions and skill-based gameplay. We will learn more about the upcoming games in a couple of months.

“Allies. Enemies. Alliances. Betrayal. Risk. Conquest. To compete with THOUSANDS of other players for a chance to claim the THRONE. Even if I lose, the experience won’t feel hollow. I don’t want another worthless trophy. I want to play to crush”, – developers state in their manifesto.

Coleman is one of the creators of Shadowbane – a popular MMORPG launched in 2003. He was one of the key figures in Wolfpack Studios. After the studio was acquired by Ubisoft, producer joined KingsIsle Entertainment in Austin. This studio produced two games Wizard101 and Pirate101.

Walton is another veteran with decades of game development experience. His career began in 1977 and he managed to work on various projects including Ultima Online, The Sims Online, Star Wars: The Old Republic. Walton is an expert in MMORPGs, so he has enough knowledge to turn the whole genre upside down.

MMOG genre is really looking for new ideas and it would be nice to see something innovative once in a while. It’s difficult to predict what kind of games will ArtCraft Entertainment produce, but we’re betting on F2P MOBAs or some kind of hybrid between MOBA and MMORPG. We’ll keep you posted about future developments.
