Astray: Epic Environment Creation in Blender

CG Cookie has revealed a new course with a step-by-step process of creating a mysterious fantasy scene.

In this course, the mentor will explain how to translate 2D art into a 3D Environment, make a library of nature assets useful for any outdoor scene, and build a hut that can be customized and used in multiple scenes. Also, in this tutorial, the creatives will focus on the lighting and creation of nature scenes. The developers of the tutorial mentioned that at the end of the course, creatives would be able to create a unique epic world in Blender.

The course is mentored by Kenan Proffitt, a creator of educational content and an experienced Environment Artist. Currently, Kenan works as Environment Supervisor at Reel FX.

The first chapter of the course will cover pre-production and proxy building. You'll start by selecting the assets and building proxies for the mystical environment.

In the second chapter, you will create rocks, trees, and grass, essentials for any outdoor scene. The mentor will show you how to model, texture, and sculpt the entire library of assets, ready to drop into the scene.

Then, you'll start working on creating the centerpiece of the scene - the scary hut with planks, doors, decks, windows, a roof, and a porch.

In the 4th part of the tutorial, you'll dive deep into Look Dev. In this step, you'll go into the details of the hut, the lantern, and the landscape to bring the environment to life.

After that, you'll be working on scattering and utilizing raycast node to randomize the elements and assets within the environment.

The last chapter will cover rendering and compositing. Kenan will share cutting-edge lighting techniques and explain in detail one of the most challenging steps of the scene: how to create a dark environment that shines.
