Blender 3.0 Brings Improved AMD GPU Rendering Support in Cycles

Cycles X now supports AMD GPUs via HIP.

The Blender team revealed that Cycles X now supports AMD GPUs via HIP, an open-source system that allows running on both Nvidia CUDA and AMD hardware. The update is available in the current daily beta build of Blender 3.0 for users who installed the new Radeon Software beta driver.

The AMD supports uses open-source C++ runtime API and kernel language called HIP which allows developers to build software that runs on both Nvidia and AMD GPUs from a single code base. "This allows the Blender Cycles developers to write one set of rendering kernels and run them across multiple devices. The other advantage is that the tools with HIP allow easy migration from existing CUDA code to something more generic," noted the team.

HIP is said to have "little or no performance impact over coding directly in CUDA mode". Cycles X in Blender 3.0 is enabled on AMD RDNA architecture graphics cards and up. The team says support has been validated by AMD on the following desktop graphics cards:

  • AMD Radeon PRO W6800
  • AMD Radeon 6900 XT
  • AMD Radeon 6800 XT
  • AMD Radeon 6800
  • AMD Radeon 6700 XT
  • AMD Radeon 6600 XT
  • AMD Radeon 6600
