Bringing Comic Strips to 3D

Artist Gabriel de Laubier showed his recent experiment where he transformed Bill Watterson’s Calvin and Hobbes “Big Bang” strip into an interactive 3D scene on Sketchfab.

Turning 2D artworks into 3D renderings is not an easy challenge. What about rendering a 2D cartoon? The thing is that the whole thing almost definitely loses an atmosphere when you add the third dimension.

Still, there are different examples. Take artist Gabriel de Laubier, for example, with his experiment where he transformed Bill Watterson’s Calvin and Hobbes “Big Bang” strip into an interactive 3D scene on Sketchfab.

The thing is pretty amazing giving the ability to jump into each section with so much depth. It took the industry 25 years to bring the comics to 3D in such a way (the original work was originally published in 1991).
