The revenues were mostly driven by mobile games.

The Chinese gaming industry generated over $12 billion in the first quarter of 2022 reflecting a 3.17% year-on-year increase, according to Gamma Data report (via GameLook). The report reads that although the Chinese games market achieved quite good results in Q1 2022, its growth slightly slowed down compared to the previous year.

Mobile games accounted for the major part of total revenue reaching $9.2 billion which is 2.72% more than a year ago. Analysts, however, noted that the year-on-year growth rate of mobile games was lower compared to the year earlier.

Gamma Data cites the success of such games as Genshin Impact and Fantasy Westward Journey as the main reason for the mobile games market growth. Besides, the recently released Civilization and Conquest also delivered an increase in consumer spending earning a total of $76.2 million.

Civilization and Conquest

It also became the top-grossing game for the first quarter in China followed by Tencent's Return to Empire, the mobile version of the Age of Empires title. The game was released in China last month and earned $45.7 million.

However, analysts point out that the year-on-year growth rate was lower compared to the same period last year as the increment of new games was lower than it was the year before.
