Dexter Studios On Using Renderman for VFX

Learn more about Dexter Studios’ workflow on VFX with Pixar’s Renderman.

Dexter Studios is a VFX studio founded by Yong-Hwa Kim in 2011 and based in Seoul, South Korea.  Initially, the studio worked on the fur production that, in the time of its foundation, was a very complex process that required a certain pipeline. The studio’s team managed the problem by developing custom VFX tools. Now, Dexter is focused on developing and researching emerging technologies.

In the new article, Leif Pedersen takes a look into the history of the company and its workflow with Renderman. You will also find the VFX production details of Dexter’s last successful award-winning movie, Parasite, and feedback on Pixar’s rendering software.

Talking about the software, Seock Hee mentioned: “We’ve tested many renderers and they all do well with simple shots, but when testing it with a production movie shot, something is always lacking or in many cases, the renderer is overwhelmed by instability. I believe that in this sense, RenderMan is the standard among the rendering interfaces that exist today”.
