Dragon Age The Veilguard Shows Off Its Action Combat

Origins lovers will be disappointed.

BioWare demonstrated some gameplay of Dragon Age: The Veilguard in a recent 20-minute video from the beginning of the game. It was edited to avoid repetition and spoilers, but you can still grasp the gist: Solas wants to tear down the Veil, and hordes of demons would fill the world.

Our protagonist, Rook, is trying to get closer to him together with Varric, scout Harding, and the ice mage Neve Gallus. The point of this gameplay review was definitely showing off the game's action combat. It looks smooth and fast-paced, a step up from the previous parts of the series, in my opinion, but those who miss the days of Origins (and there are a lot of them, according to various comments) will be disappointed.

BioWare also highlighted the new customizable ability wheel it mentioned before, which allows you to "pause the action, issue commands to your followers, use abilities, and unleash devastating combos." I'm not sure how I feel about it because it looks like it breaks the momentum and introduces a pretty clunky element, although I'll have to play the game to fully understand it.

Another detail I noticed is that our character is finally not a static doll that looks at people stupidly and gives meek answers. From the video at least, looks like Rook has a backbone and some character.

BioWare is planning to reveal more about Dragon Age: The Veilguard before its launch on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5 this fall. You can ask some questions at the Developer Discord Q&A on June 14th at 10 am PT.
