Duelyst Developer Shares the Game's Source Code for Free

The team behind Duelyst has made the source code for its game publicly available, encouraging developers and fans to use it to create modifications and new versions of the game.

The developers behind the digital collectible card game Duelyst announced that they have made its now-closed card battler open source meaning that source code and art assets for the game are now available for free, allowing modders, indie developers, and hobbyists to use them without any royalties.

The studio's lead producer, Dick Heyne, announced the move in a YouTube video, stating that users can now create their own versions of Duelyst, including custom card designs, servers, and game modes.

In an interview with PC Gamer, the producer explained that with this move, the studio wants to support independent and emerging developers.

"We are experiencing some major changes in our industry: new technologies and consoles, and even massive consolidations that have occurred over the past couple of years," Heyne said. "While only time will tell how these changes will alter the landscape, these shifts can potentially hit indie developers the hardest. That's why we want to recognize that these developers, be they sole individuals or small teams, are vital for the growth and diversity of our industry."

For those unaware, Duelyst is a free-to-play collectible card game released in April 2016 by Counterplay Games. Although the game was praised by critics, over time, its audience started to decline and the developers decided to shut it down. The servers were closed in February 2020.

Nearly three years after the game's servers were shut down, in December 2022, however, the game returned as Duelyst II, a fan-made remake developed by Dream Sloth Games, – Counterplay Games has granted a license to the team to create an updated version of the game.

And now, Counterplay Games has released the Duelyst source code which is available for free on GitHub. Additionally, Counterplay Games will be releasing Duelyst Classic, "a version of the game exactly as it was in v1.96.17, before the servers were shut down." Heyne also mentioned that there are already a couple of projects based on Duelyst in development.
