Electronic Arts has announced it is working on a new mobile title set in J.R.R Tolkien's Middle-earth. It will be a free-to-play collectible RPG called The Lord of the Rings: Heroes of Middle-earth.

The new game that is being made in cooperation with Middle-earth Enterprises is described as a title that "brings the fantasy and adventure of The Lord of the Rings to existing fans and new audiences alike in a strategic, social-competitive experience". It will be developed by EA Capital Games, the studio known for another collectible RPG Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes.

Heroes of Middle-earth will feature "immersive storytelling" along with turn-based combat and collection systems. Besides, it will include a broad variety of characters from both The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. According to VP of Mobile RPG for Electronic Arts Malachi Boyle, the title will be a "combination of high-fidelity graphics, cinematic animations, and stylized art".

"We are incredibly excited to partner with The Saul Zaentz Company and Middle-earth Enterprises on the next generation of mobile role-playing games," Boyle said. "The team is filled with fans of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit and each day they bring their tremendous passion and talents together to deliver an authentic experience for players. "

The publisher hasn't shared any further details on the game and hasn't offered any release window yet.
