Foundry's Mari 5.0 is Now Available in Beta

The new version comes with an updated USD-based workflow for exporting preview looks to Katana, support for multiple colors in paint strokes, and more.

Foundry has released Mari 5.0, the next major version of its 3D texture painting application, in beta. The highlight of the update is its move to Python 3.7 as part of wider support for the VFX Reference Platform‘s CY2020 specification. For studios that have not yet moved their pipelines to Python 3, Foundry has a separate build of the software, Mari 4.8, which provides the same new features as Mari 5.0, but which remains on Python 2.7

The update also features:

  • A new USD-based workflow for exporting preview looks to Katana.
  • New Bake Point Filters system that gives an ability to non-destructively apply filters, such as Gaussian Blur, to your paint data without leaving the NodeGraph.
  • An improved brush system.
  • Converting a Projection procedural to a paintable layer across 128 4K UDIMs at 16-bit, depending on your hardware and software configuration, can now take up to 50% less time than ever before.
  • Nuke-style ‘Snap to Grid’ is now available for all artists who want to fine-tune their node graph organization and layout.
  • And much, much more!
