Newzoo works on a report about the progress of the video game industry from 2015 to 2018. Analysts believe that China will dominate the game market this year.

Citizens of China will spend $22.2 billion on video games, slightly higher than USA gamers ($22 billion). However, this gap will be even wider in the next three years according to Newzoo chief executive Peter Warman. In 2018, the US market will reach $24.1 billion with China’s market topping at $32.8 billion. This will change what percentage of the global market comes from different types of games. China’s mobile market will push the percentage for traditional platforms, such as gaming consoles down to 24% in 2018.

In 2012, the company estimated that money would divide itself across four typical screens in an equal manner if they all will be equally valued by the consumers. It turns out that things are moving in these directions. The growth of the mobile market in China may be due to its cultural legacy as the country has small housing and little gaming tradition.

Peter Warman stated that running games as a service has become the norm. A change to a more pure digital model can be expected if traditional consoles continue to stay closed systems tied to traditional retail agreements. If these trends continue, products like Valve’s Steam Box, Nvidia’s Shield, and Amazon’s Fire TV may become more popular in the future.
