Ghostbusters' Headquarters Recreated in Unreal Engine 5

The goal behind the project was to test out Nanite's handling of hard-surface objects.

MA and BA Games Lecturer and 3D Artist Neil Gallagher demonstrated an amazing recreation of the iconic Ghostbusters headquarters building and the legendary Ecto-1 car. According to the artist, the HQ building itself and the buildings surrounding it were initially made in UE4 and then ported to Unreal Engine 5. The transition from one version of the engine to another was made to "keep up to date with Unreal", commented the artist.

However, the highlight of the project is the renowned Ecto-1 car that belongs to the Ghostbusters team. The artist said that the goal here was to test Nanite on a hard-surface object, and the iconic vehicle was the perfect test subject. The project's description states that the car has 8 million polygons and, as Neil put it, "mainly cobbled together from downloads". The car's glass was made as a separate object as Nanite will drop any transparency.

"This makes the model come in at 150MB, not vs textures, I guess," commented the creator. "The material is just a bunch of world-aligned materials to help give the car some dirt, it feels very hacky but fun to play with."

And here's the UE4 version of the project, demonstrated by Neil last year:
