HCL Utilities for Substance Designer

The HCL Utilities pack by Etienne Bednarz includes a number of tools for Substance Designer that will help you set up colors in the HCL color space

"The HCL color space lets you keep consistency in your Luminance while working on the Hue or Chrominance, thus keeping consistency on the color perception of your textures, and the final lighting of your scene," noted the author. 

An HSL and HCL transformation comparison.

Seven nodes (.sbsar) included:

  • HCL
  • Luminance Extract: Extract the Luminance component of any color input, in both sRGB and Linear space
  • HCL Color Variation: Create color variations form any color input by modulating its HCL components
  • HCL Split: Split an RGB image in 3 Grayscale HCL component
  • HCL Merge: Merge 3 Grayscale component in the HCL color space to get an RGB image
  • RGB to HCL: Convert an RGB input into an HCL output
  • HCL to RGB: Convert an HCL input into an RGB output.
