Intel VP Says We Are Years Away from the Metaverse

Intel Senior VP suggests that the persistent online metaverse requires much more powerful computers than we have now.

Last week, the Senior vice president and General manager of the Accelerated Computing Systems and Graphics (AXG) Group at Intel Corporation, Raja Koduri, shared some thoughts on powering metaverses in a blog. There, he reasoned that "truly persistent and immersive computing" that billions of people can access in real-time needs "a 1,000-times increase in computational efficiency from today’s state of the art". That leads us to the conclusion that a Meta Quest 2 won't do.

Fairly speaking, Koduri anticipates a high-end version of the platform, including realistic avatars and environments where reality is blended with virtual elements. Nevertheless, this news has a sobering effect.

Referring to Intel, Koduri mentioned that the company relies on upgrading such critical areas as intelligence, ops, and computer. The meta intelligence layer touches upon a “unified programming model and software development tools”, the meta ops layer covers “the infrastructure layer that delivers compute to users beyond what is available to them locally”, and the meta compute layer refers to "the raw horsepower necessary to power [the] metaverse experiences".

Nowadays we can see the beginnings of something that would probably be a developed metaverse on several platforms. Facebook's rumored rebranding to Meta implies the focus on the upcoming metaverse. Some VR apps like Rec Room and VRChat allow users to generate their avatars and create worlds. In October 2021, a virtual gaming metaverse, Star Atlas, released a new trailer (can click here to learn more). However, Koduri's words evidence the fact that we are years away from the persistent online metaverse becoming a reality.
