Magic: The Gathering & Hearthstone Devs Launch a New Studio, Popularium

The studio has already announced its debut project – a PC and web strategy game called Chaos Agents.

Game industry veterans Richard Garfield, Skaff Elias, Arka Ray, and Jon Bankard, known for working on and leading teams behind some of the world's most well-known games and franchises, such as Magic: The Gathering, Hearthstone, and World of Warcraft, announced they have joined forces to launch a new game studio, Popularium.

The establishment of the new studio was revealed during a private "First Look" event, where the developers also announced Popularium's debut title – a PC and web strategy game called Chaos Agents.

In an interview with GamesBeat, Garfield shared that Chaos Agents intends to bring back a magical feeling to playing digital card games. The game is expected to blend various genres and incorporate multiplayer elements, which are referred to as "auto battler royale."

The studio noted that starting with Chaos Agents, it aims to focus on developing gameplay that is packed with "unique world-building and character development", as well as providing "fun, meaningful gaming experiences" that actively engage the community.

"The core philosophy behind Popularium is to empower gamers, instead of treating them purely as customers," Ray said. "We're building games and experiences that blur the lines between gamers and creators. We want to give gamers the kind of joy, flexibility and depth in our games that they would expect from the creators of Magic, Hearthstone, and more."

Popularium has opened up a waitlist for players who are interested in joining the Chaos Agents community ahead of the game's release. Additionally, the studio is expected to announce more news this summer.
