Malmö's Game Studios Aim to Recruit 3,500 Devs by 2030

Malmö's game studios have launched a joint campaign aimed to expand the game development force to 5,000 employees by 2030.

A number of game development studios in Malmö, the city in the Swedish county of Scania, have launched a joint campaign aimed to recruit about 3,500 game developers by 2030.

Currently, Malmö, a city with a population of 350.000, has over 60 studios that employ about 1,500 game developers. And the game development industry in the city is expected to continue to grow with the number of game developers expected to increase by 233% in 7 years.

Despite the city having 6 game education programs with 350 students, and the region having another 4 programs with additional 550 students, to meet the recruitment needs, a number of developers will have to be hired internationally. Partially, because the city's industry is in need of additional senior talent.

To mark the start of the campaign which is led by the regional member organization for game studios Game Habitat, Malmö's game development studios released a promo reel that features 20 game studios located in the city and 30 of their locally made games.

With this new reel, Malmö's studios wanted to highlight the fact that Malmö is "not only home to world-class studios and games, but also provides the city’s inhabitants with a great quality of life outside of work."

The joint campaign is expected to continue in the next few years with various intensity and focus as a complementary measure to the recruiting efforts Malmö's studios are already engaged in.

As part of the campaign, representatives from Game Habitat and Malmö’s game industry will be present in the Nordic pavilion at Gamescom in Cologne, Germany next week – during the trade fair they will showcase the opportunities for developers and studios in Malmö.
