Marcos G. Geymonat has shared a nice breakdown of the master shader he created for a version of Dain and his boar.  

Greetings everyone! This is fairly streamlined breakdown of how I created the master shader I used for both Dain and his boar on my reel

Note that I’m by no means a shader wizard so this can probably be greatly iterated, improved and optimized, feel free to comment or ask questions! 

 

I also want to thank Allegorithmic and Epic for all the documentation on the layered workflow which I used as reference and specially Harrison Moore for his amazing talk at GDC.
