Microsoft Is Working on Game Preservation Using Emulation

And you can help it.

Xbox

Microsoft is looking for a Principal Software Engineer who will be helping it emulate Xbox games. The specialist will "build the next evolution in Xbox Game Compatibility" to secure the future of game preservation, according to the job listing.

"Your work will help identify and outline the specific requirements and security boundaries for protecting game content, build scalable emulation solutions, and ensure a safe and fun gameplay experience for all players. Our technology solutions are a critical part of enabling the Xbox goal of allowing players to experience their games on any device."

The Engineer will implement the Xbox backward compatibility game security system and implement solutions developed to emulate legacy games on modern platforms.

Required/minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, and C# or equivalent experience.
  • 4+ years of experience working on a gaming platform or in a game studio.

Microsoft has already started porting its once-exclusives to PlayStation and Switch, so this emulation initiative, which, unfortunately, doesn't specify the platforms Microsoft is targeting, is not that surprising. Perhaps the engineer will focus on bringing old Xbox games to current platforms; there is one way to know: apply if you have the necessary experience.

Game preservation is an important movement, which, sadly, has been crippled by developers and publishers refusing to cooperate. Tim Cain, the co-creator of Fallout, has lamented the loss of the game's materials, saying that game preservation is super important but is not treated properly.

Miraculously, Interplay's co-founder, Rebecca Heineman, has revealed that she has the code of Fallout 1 and 2, so hopefully, we will see it in public access one day.
