Microsoft to buy InMobi

With the new acquisition Microsoft will get its hands on billion monthly mobile users.

Marketing Land reports that Microsoft is going to buy mobile ad network/platform InMobi. This is an company from India, which has a vast network, covering almost a billion users per month. It’s another huge acquisition for Microsoft, which seems to be heavily inclined to purchase all the internet services out there.

Insiders say that Google and Yahoo were also in talks to buy the company. However, they were not able to come to terms. Google wanted to buy InMobi for $2 billion, so we guess Microsoft paid a little bit more (or a lot more).

This acquisition will bring Microsoft a huge part of the mobile advertising market. Microsoft has a fairly low position with Windows Phone and its Bing search engine is also lacking the mass appeal. Facebook, Google and Yahoo are way ahead in terms of mobile ad revenues. So potentially it’s big news for Microsoft’s mobile division.

So far Microsoft doesn’t confirm anything. We’ll have to wait for the official confirmation.
