Freelance concept designer Carlos Alberto Martínez has a nice tutorial on modeling sci-fi helmets in ZBrush without an initial concept. It is a great example of creating a hard surface piece from scratch.
Unfortunately, this is a silent guide and it doesn’t feature details on post-production and rendering parts, but you can still learn a lot. The artist used his set of hard surface details to create the helmet.
