Electronic Arts is building a new studio in Vancouver, Canada. The company is called Motive Studios. Its main objective is producing a new open world action game that can rival GTA V and other projects of Rockstar Games. How are they going to do that?
Like any big company, EA starts with hiring some well-known and talented people. During UBS Global Technology Conference in San Francisco EA’s CFO Blake Jorgensen mentioned that Motive Studios has hired Assassin’s Creed producer Jade Raymond. She will most likely help the company to make a decent action game in an open world environment.
We’ve never really operated in the largest genre of gaming, and that’s the action genre. That’s the Assassin’s Creed-style games; more open-world, more single-play versus multiplayer. It’s not been an area that we’ve operated in. We recently hired Jade Raymond, who was behind the Assassin’s Creed franchise for Ubisoft and she will be building an action genre for us through a studio we’re building out in Montreal right now. So a lot of excitement around the action genre.

I’M THRILLED THAT THE FIRST BIG PROJECT THAT WE WILL WORK ON IN MONTREAL WILL HAVE AMY AS CREATIVE DIRECTOR. AN OPPORTUNITY TO WORK WITH HER AND THE VISCERAL TEAM, AND TO PLAY IN THE STAR WARS UNIVERSE, IS ONCE-IN-A-LIFE-TIME STUFF. EVERYONE IN THIS INDUSTRY HAS A MOTIVE, AN IDEA THEY WANT TO BRING TO LIFE, A NEW IDEA THEY’D LIKE TO SEE IN A GAME. IT’S WHAT’S SO GREAT ABOUT THIS INDUSTRY.

The other big game in the company is Amy Hennig. She’s a well known script writer and game director, who worked in Uncharted series, Legacy of Kain. Technically she’s with Visceral Games now, working on the next Star Wars game, but her picture is on the official Motive Studios website. Raymond is actually also contributing to the aforementioned title.
Looks like EA is looking for more talented artists, who are experienced with building big open environments. DICE can definitely help with that, since this company has created a lot of very big games with vast open levels in the last decade. There’s a big chance EA will also start using a new technology to build an open world action game. It could be an upgraded Frostbite engine, or an entirely different platform. This is entirely our speculation of course.
What do you guys think? Will EA make a good open world game? Do they have enough power to rival Rockstar Games?
