Nintendo has released an statement on their website saying that Satoru Iwata, the President of Nintendo, has passed away at the age of 55. It is a sad day not only for the fans of Nintendo, but the gaming community as well.

The statement reads:

Nintendo Co., Ltd. deeply regrets to announce that President Satoru Iwata passed away on July 11, 2015 due to a bile duct growth.

It was revealed just last year that he was having health issues when Nintendo said that it was surgery on his bile duct that would be the reason for his absence at E3 2014. Even with this issue, he continued to work and even participated in the most recent meeting with Nintendo shareholders on June 26.

It’s obvious though, how he was able to do that. There aren’t many who have as much drive, passion, and love for video games as he did. Rest in peace Mr. Iwata. Thank you for all you’ve done.
