Oculus Quest 2 Got Hand Tracking Upgrade

The update improved tracking continuity, hand-over-hand interactions, and gesture recognition.

Reality Labs upgraded hand tracking on Presence Platform – Meta's set of "machine perception and AI capabilities" for Mixed Reality that works with Oculus Quest 2.

The key improvement is better tracking continuity, which means the system will not lose track of your hands as often as it did before. Connected to this aspect, better gesture recognition will allow more precise finger movement.

"With improved pinch, grab, and poke recognition, you can expect fewer accidental or missed gestures that take away from the content you’ve created."

Reality Labs also developed a new method of applying deep learning, so now the system recognizes gestures better even when part of the hand is hidden. This benefits apps that require robust tracking and more complex gestures, such as hand-over-hand interactions, like crossing your hands over each other, clapping, or giving high-fives, and a thumbs-up gesture when the rest of your fingers are blocked from view by your palm.

You can see the results of the upgrade in VR games that require accurate movement. Moreover, the company promises to show more Presence Platform capabilities soon.
