The console shows amazing results despite production constraints.
Market research group NPD announced that PlayStation 5 is now the fastest-selling console ever in the US in both unit and dollar sales. Sony managed to sell 4.5m units globally in 2020, and then, in February, the team revealed they are on track to sell over 7.6m consoles by 31st March 2021.
The research also noted that Nintendo Switch is doing great, too. NPD's executive director Mat Piscatella noted that Nintendo Switch was the best-selling hardware platform in both units and dollars in March.
Sony's next goal for PS5 is to sell more than 14.8m PS5s in its current fiscal year ending 31st March 2022, but the production is limited because of a chip shortage so they might tweak the expected number.
"We expect PS5's high demand to continue into next fiscal year and will do our best to meet that demand," Chief Financial Officer Hiroki Totoki noted a couple of months ago.
