PS5 Shipments Reached 19.3 Million Units Since the Launch

Sony published its financial results for the FY2021, revealing that its game sales slightly rose to $20.7 billion. The company also shared that PlayStation 5 shipments reached 19.3 million since the console launched.

Sony has released its financial results for the fourth quarter of 2021 and the full fiscal year ended on March 31, 2022.

According to the report, the revenue of the company's gaming division grew by 3% compared to the previous year and reached nearly $25 billion. Operating income from the company's game segment remained almost unchanged and amounted to $2.6 billion in FY2021.

Sony's game sales saw a 3.1% year-on-year growth reaching $20.7 billion. The PS4 and PS5 consoles sold 70.5 million games during the quarter, 14.5 million of which were games from the company's internal studios. Sales of Sony's own games have almost doubled compared to the last quarter of FY2020, from 7.9 million to 14.5 million copies.

PS4 and PS5 game sales for the full fiscal year totaled 303.2 million, down 35 million from 2020. Sales of games from Sony's in-house studios also declined from 58.4 million to 43.9 million copies for the year.

Sony's hardware segment reached $6.4 billion which reflects a 9.5% year-on-year growth. Revenue for network services increased by 6.8% to $3.1 billion, while digital software and add-on content revenues were down 2% to $10.8 billion.

The PS4 sold only 100,000 consoles in the quarter and 1 million in the year. In comparison, 5.7 million PS4 units were shipped in FY2020. PS5 shipments for the quarter were 2 million units, and for the entire fiscal year, they amounted to 11.5 million. Sony initially planned to ship 14.8 million consoles for the year, but then adjusted its forecast to 11.5 million and was able to achieve this figure.

Total shipments of PS5 since the beginning of sales amounted to 19.3 million units. In the fiscal year 2022, the company expects to ship 18 million PS5 units.

In 2022, Sony expects its gaming division to show revenue growth due to increased sales of both PS4 and PS5 consoles and games, while operating income, as the company predicts, will decrease. Sony plans to increase spending on game development, a portion of the proceeds will also go towards the purchase of Bungie and other potential acquisitions.
