Pushback Works: Adobe Animate Is Not Shutting Down

The application will no longer receive any new features but will remain accessible to both existing and new users.

Yesterday, Substance 3D and Photoshop developer Adobe set the entire world of digital 2D animation on fire by announcing the upcoming discontinuation and shutdown of Adobe Animate, a legendary software previously known as Adobe Flash Professional, which, over the past 30 years since its debut, has powered tens of thousands of animation projects from indie creators and major Hollywood-level studios alike.

Following what was probably one of the largest waves of backlash the company has ever faced, it only took the developer about 24 hours to reverse course, with them issuing a follow-up statement confirming that Adobe Animate will not be shut down.

According to the company's new announcement, the earlier warning stating that March 1, 2027, would be the application's final day should now be disregarded, as Adobe is neither discontinuing nor removing access to Adobe Animate, and there is no longer any deadline or date set for when Animate will stop being available.

Going forward, the software will remain accessible to both new and existing users, although Adobe has confirmed that users shouldn't expect the addition of any new features. Instead, the program will remain in a perpetual "maintenance mode," meaning Adobe will continue supporting the application and providing regular security updates and bug fixes.

Animate will continue to be available for both new and existing users. This is a change from what we communicated in the email yesterday for the status of Adobe Animate, its time-frame, and availability," commented Adobe's Mike Chambers. "To be clear, we are not discontinuing or removing access to Adobe Animate, and it will continue to be available to both existing and new customers. For Adobe Animate, our commitment is to work with the community to ensure users continue to have long-term access to their content, regardless of the state of development of the application."
