Qualcomm has unveiled the new features of its Snapdragon Spaces platform which enable smartphone apps to seamlessly work together with AR headsets.
At the recent Augmented World Expo (AWE), an AR-focused developer conference that took place from May 31 to June 2 in San Jose, California, Qualcomm introduced new features of its Snapdragon Spaces XR Developer Platform, which will allow for a seamless cross-device work between smartphones as AR headsets.
Qualcomm said it has been developing Snapdragon Spaces for several years. This platform combines the resources of Android smartphones and AR glasses running on Qualcomm processors to deliver an immersive AR experience.
The platform's latest addition, Dual Render Fusion, brings AR capabilities to existing smartphone applications and enables control through connected AR glasses. According to Qualcomm, Dual Render Fusion will allow developers to expand their 2D mobile apps into 3D experiences on a world-scale, without having any prior XR experience.
Most of the AR/VR headsets available in the market already feature Qualcomm's chips, with a few more devices set to launch soon. One such device is Oppo's MR Glasses, a mixed reality headset that uses cameras to display passthrough video on its screen, similar to the Quest Pro and Apple's long-rumored AR/VR headset.
Qualcomm is also collaborating with Google and Samsung on a mixed-reality platform and device that is likely to be revealed in more detail next year.
It is likely that both Apple's upcoming headset and the Samsung-Qualcomm partnership with Google will allow smartphone and tablet apps to work with their respective headsets. This will make it easier for users to seamlessly transition from their current devices to the new AR/VR technology. Microsoft's partnership with Qualcomm on XR chips may also involve similar plans for Windows.
