Raytraced Shadows in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare

An in-depth presentation integrating ray tracing into modern game engines.

Activision has recently shared a presentation on how ray tracing can be integrated into a modern game engine with minimal content changes. The team discussed their approach to the ray tracing of multiple local area lights and showed how to efficiently clean up any resulting noise.

First, the team described the motivation behind raytracing, and why they chose shadows. The developers discussed some problems. both specific and general ones to explain challenges behind raytracing. Then they described solutions that worked for them. The topics covered in the presentation include "raytracing in general (from shader perspective), how to feed it with optimal data and how to denoise multiple lights per pixel at the same time." They used NVIDIA RTX 2070 at 1440p in this case.
