Simulating Cartoon-Like Waves in Unity

Brent Forrest revealed the team’s approach to creating cartoon-like waves for The Peak animated film using Unity.

During Unite Tokyo 2019, Brent Forrest presented the approach to creating cartoon-like waves without using procedural workflow in Unity.

During the talk, Brent talked about solving the key challenged of animation production: how to bring hand-drawn effect to the CG-environment in a quick and efficient way when working in a large team?

While explaining the team’s approach, he showcased the workflow step by step:

  • Working in Adobe Flash for hand drawing
  • Bridging Flash and Maya to import a sequence of illustrator files
  • Working with curves in Maya: turning them to flat meshes, then turn them to deform meshes, and then extrude to do sculpting
  • Automating the sculpting process to decrease the production time by creating custom deformers
