SPOOKJUMP is working on a skateboarding roguelike with guns.
Game Developer SPOOKJUMP has shared an update on their upcoming unnamed stylized skateboarding roguelike, which evokes the spirit of 720°, the classic skateboarding arcade game released by Atari Games in the '80s.
The physics are already highly satisfying, though adding ragdolls for failed tricks could enhance the experience even further. Regarding the algorithm, SPOOKJUMP noted that the skate controller utilizes Unity's Rigidbody component, but it's heavily modified through custom scripts. Extensive surface checking, quaternions, and animations are involved to make everything function smoothly.
In this system, surface checking works by casting a ray from just above the player downwards to determine the surface normal and check if the player is grounded. Based on the surface normal, the character is rotated to align with it. This method is also employed for other purposes, such as detecting whether the player is jumping on a half-pipe.
