According to Data.ai data, the release of the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 movie that came out on big screens in April this year significantly impacted the popularity of mobile games based on the Sonic franchise.
Data.ai found a direct correlation between the games and movie markets. For instance, Sonic Forces: Speed Battle was downloaded 4.6 million times in April despite the fact that the game is already 5 years old. This result is the highest since the game's launch. In comparison, between January and March 2022, the average number of downloads was 1.85 million.
Following the release of the movie, the game ranked eighth in terms of downloads and fourth in terms of revenue in the runner category. It also saw a 135% increase in consumer spending in April 2022. Besides, players accessed the game more often than they did previously – 24 times per day, which is also the highest result among other top runner games during the period.
The number of downloads for other Sonic games including Sonic The Hedgehog, Sonic The Hedgehog 2, Sonic Dash, and Sonic Dash 2: Sonic Boom also increased. However, Sonic Forces: Speed Battle attracted most of the users' attention.
