Sony Reportedly Plans to Produce 2 Million Units of PSVR 2 by March

It is claimed that the company anticipates that its next-gen VR headset will have "much greater popularity" than its predecessor.

Sony's next-gen VR headset, PlayStation VR2, will enter the market in early 2023 but the company already has really ambitious plans for the device.

According to Bloomberg, which cites sources familiar with the company's plans, Sony anticipates that PSVR 2 will have "much greater popularity" than its predecessor, PSVR for PlayStation 4. Bloomberg's sources also claim that for PSVR 2, Sony plans to have 2 million units produced by March, so apparently, these millions of headsets should be available for the first adopters.

The original VR device managed to sell a million units within eight months after its launch, so Sony producing as many devices by March could mean significantly larger ambitions for the upcoming headset.

According to sources, PlayStation VR2 entered mass production in September and has not yet faced supply chain constraints. The sources also noted that the number of units planned to be produced might be adjusted depending on the device's sales momentum when the headset is released.

At the same time, the sources noted that the current plan to start selling the device in early 2023 should "coincide with expected relief of the supply chain bottlenecks that have hampered availability of the PlayStation 5" since its launch at the end of 2020.

Currently, almost everything is known about the PSVR 2, including its characteristics and design, the fact that the device will feature eye-tracking, and that it will feature over 20 major titles at launch. The only two questions that remained unanswered are the exact release date of the headset and its cost.
