Square Enix Made $3 Billion Last Year

The publisher has revealed its financial results for the fiscal year ending on March 31, 2021.

According to the official document released by Square Enix, the company earned ¥332 billion ($3 billion) between March 31, 2020, and March 31, 2021, which is ¥72 billion (or 27.6%) more than the previous year. So far, this is the company's record number of yearly earnings.

As Square Enix reports, their operating income increased from ¥32.7 to ¥47.2 billion, while the ordinary income grew from ¥32.0 to ¥49.9. Their number of employees has also risen from 5,077 to 5,550.

The biggest earnings came from net sales of the games for smart devices/PC just like the previous year. This time, however, the HD games are on the rise as the sales in this segment went up from ¥42.0 to ¥96.6 billion. This happened thanks to Square Enix's big releases which include Marvel's Avengers, Trials of Mana, and Final Fantasy VII Remake.

Even though the games were a huge success for Square Enix, its earnings in the amusement segment fell sharply, primarily due to the COVID-19 pandemic. They went from ¥45.6 to ¥34.3 billion. Now, one of the goals set by the company is to optimize the business structure for the COVID world, minimizing the risks caused by the pandemic.

According to Square Enix's forecast, next fiscal year net sales are expected to reach ¥340 billion ($3.1 billion).
