The Banner Saga Franchise: Sound Production

In the GDC talk, composer Austin Wintory talked about the sound production for The Banner Saga franchise, discussed the challenges of making it sound as an AAA game with an indie budget and shared the creative solutions they found to achieve it.

During the talk, Austin Wintory discussed the workflow of sound production for all three games and talked about different approaches to it. For instance, he talked about how they managed to create heavy volume sound, shared the examples with the audience, compared the team’s workflow on each game and shared his thoughts on how different instruments can be used in an unusual way. 

Austin Wintory is a Grammy-nominated and BAFTA-winning film and video game composer, who worked various games such as  ABZÛ, Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, and The Banner Saga trilogy. The trilogy is a Viking saga where players decide on their own journey.  The players will have to travel across the mesmerizing landscape and figure out who they should help fight a new danger that threatens civilization. The game has some cool features like strategic combats with consequences, characters from 2 different races, human and varl, the horned giants, and enhanced multiplayer combat.
