The Coalition Presented a Technical Demo Made Using Unreal Engine 5

Check out Alpha Point, a UE5-made demo created by the developers of the Gears of War franchise.

The Coalition, a Canadian video game development studio best known for their Gears of War series, has released a technical demo made entirely with Unreal Engine 5 at GDC 2021. The demo is called Alpha Point and it showcases the capabilities of UE5 on the Xbox Series.

Earlier, The Coalition claimed that they’re switching to Unreal Engine 5 development going forward. Despite that, the team notes that Alpha Point does not reflect any games they are currently developing. The demo is pushing over 100 million polygons at once with real-time lighting and reflections on Xbox Series X hardware. Most of the assets in the demo contain between 300k and 500k triangles.

The Coalition has also released a character rendering test that shows just how realistic faces can get with Unreal Engine 5.

The Coalition team has also released a behind-the-scenes 1-hour-long breakdown of the demo with Colin Penty, a Technical Art Director at The Coalition, as the speaker. He covered creating new base materials, lighting and post-processing, VFX, working with MetaHuman, and many other topics.
