The Math of Comp: a Free Short Course for Nuke Users

Ben McEwan released a short course to help VFX artists have a better understanding of the tools available in Nuke and how exactly they modify the images.

The course consists of 3 video lessons and is about 25 minutes long in total. In the first lesson, Ben explains the math behind the Grade Node works and demonstrates how different methods of matching black levels change the picture. The second lesson is dedicated to pixel filtering and node concatenation. The last lesson explains how you can manipulate images more effectively using pixel data via ST Maps.

The course is a perfect opportunity to deepen the technical knowledge of Nuke both for the industry professionals and students getting into the art of VFX. As Ben McEwan says, it is not uncommon for creators to randomly adjust sliders until their image looks right, without completely understanding how exactly those work and why certain effects appear. The Math of Comp is all about the fundamentals of image manipulation and the technicalities behind it.

For those who prefer learning by reading, there is a downloadable PDF transcript of all three lessons. There is also a special bonus for those who donate $5 or more, and this includes digital downloads for the video lessons and the Nuke script Ben used to demonstrate all the concepts in this course.
