The Number of Gamers in China Decreased in 2021

The slower growth in the number of Chinese gamers is attributed to the strict regulation of the gaming industry in the country.

According to the recent Research and Market report that explores the Chinese mobile games market, the number of gamers in the country decreased in 2021. The analysts evaluate that last year China had about 706 million gamers, down 3.7% from the previous year.

The firm attributes the slower growth in the number of gamers to the strict regulation of the gaming industry in the country. However, it anticipates that the number of Chinese gamers will continue to grow, and by 2026 it will reach 730 million.

The report also provides data on the revenue both mobile and PC games generated in the country. According to the analysts, domestic mobile and PC game revenue reached $45.49 billion in 2021, which reflects a 5.5% increase compared to the previous year. The report also states that the revenue is set to reach $55.23 billion by 2026 at a 5-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4%.

As for the average revenue per user (the total revenue divided by the number of users), it amounted to $64.44 in 2021 in China. The analysts claim that it is projected to reach $75.60 by 2026. Meanwhile, average revenue per paying user is also on the rise, according to the report.

China’s export mobile and PC game revenue saw a significant increase in 2021 – it reached $17.3 billion, up 27.3% compared to 2020, and is set to reach $26.46 billion by 2026 at a 5-year CAGR of 8.9%.
