Tsai was responsible for shaping the transmedia future of the Destiny franchise at Bungie, however, no concrete outcomes have surfaced so far.
Derick Tsai, an employee of Bungie and the head of transmedia for the Destiny universe, has seemingly departed from Bungie.
As spotted by TheGamePost, this change is indicated by an update to Tsai's LinkedIn profile which states that he left the studio in March 2023.
Tsai became a member of Bungie at the beginning of 2022, with the aim of generating concepts that would " expand Destiny into linear mediums" such as movies, TV shows, animation, books, and comics. In addition to this, his responsibilities included cultivating partnerships with prominent media organizations and creative talent, as well as contributing to the franchise's overall vision.
Additionally, Tsai advised unannounced Bungie IPs on using transmedia to broaden audience reach. Apparently, Bungie was interested in extending its new IPs into transmedia. The company is currently working on multiple unrevealed projects – some of them are related to Destiny, while others are entirely new IPs.
Tsai has a background in franchise development, having worked for studios like HyperX and Universal before joining Bungie. Notably, he served as a director and producer for multiple animated short films at Riot Games.
There has been no official statement from either Bungie or Tsai regarding his departure. Moreover, Bungie has yet to reveal any details about its transmedia initiatives, and the transmedia department has yet to produce any content. However, it's important to note that Tsai's exit doesn't necessarily imply that Bungie has halted development on his projects.
