Ultima Creators Are Making a New Blockchain MMO Focused on NFTs

Richard Garriott, the creator of the Ultima series, is working on a new project. It will be an online Ultima-like RPG that uses blockchain and NFT technology.

DeMeta, a newly-formed gaming studio started by Todd Porter, a founding producer of Dungeons & Dragons and the original Ultima series, and the creator of the Ultima series, Richard Garriott, has started developing a new massively multiplayer online game that will integrate blockchain technology.

In an interview with PCGamesN, Garriott, known to Ultima fans as "Lord British", admitted that he and his long-time collaborator, Porter, are aware of the issues crypto can bring both in terms of the technology itself and how the players can perceive a game.

The devs noted that currently there is no game on the market that uses NFT which would have strong and interesting gameplay. They also shared that their ambition is to create a decent game that will be enriched with the possibilities resulting from the use of blockchain.

The name of the new project has not been revealed yet, although Garriott has shared some early details on the upcoming title. According to him, the new game will be a top-down fantasy RPG inspired by classic MMOs that will resemble the modernized version of the Ultima series.

The use of NFT technology will allow players to buy pieces of virtual land and have proof of ownership that is logged on a blockchain. Once players own the land, they'll be able to build in-game businesses like shops or inns and create portals that can transport players to a dungeon level they’ve created. Besides, the landowners will be able to receive the economic reward from sales generated by NPC-run pubs or shops.
