Valve Added 3D Scans of Dead Bugs to SteamVR

Besides fixing several bugs in SteamVR, Valve also added several new ones with the recent update.

Valve has announced the release of SteamVR 1.23, a new and improved version of the company's tool for experiencing VR content on any hardware. According to the announcement, the update features continued progress on OpenXR, updates the Float in World icon, brings several minor improvements to controls, and adds tons of various bug-related improvements and features.

But the absolute highlight of the update is not the bugs that were fixed but instead the bugs that were deliberately added by Valve. The update brings high-detail 3D scans of actual dead bugs the team found lying on the ground outside their office.

According to the team, these scans were produced using an industrial CT scanner capable of extremely high-resolution scans. The captured data was then processed with a computer to generate a 3D voxel grid and converted into simpler 3D models capable of being rendered in real-time on your GPU. The dead bugs scans allow you to thoroughly study the insects' anatomy and learn about their organs, body parts, and such.

"CT scanner was a GE Phoenix V|tome|x S X-Ray Machine with dual 240kV and 180kV tubes and the larger DXR 400mm detector, the 180kV tube being used for insect scans as they are mostly homogeneous in density, and the lower power tube produces smaller voxel sizes," the Valve told about the tech behind the scans.
