Environment Artist Jeremy Estrellado of Massive Entertainment showed how he approaches building playable spaces for The Division.
Jeremy Estrellado is a very talented guy, who worked on a number of hit games, including Forza 5 and LOTR: War in the North (and probably a bunch of other games). He’s been always into new tech, which actually helped him a lot of high recommendations on Linkedin. In this video, Jeremy actually shows how you can manipulate your objects and craft playable environments, which looks realistic and remain fine.
The video lasts 3 hours and features tons of gamedev-specific details. It goes far beyond just the level of materials and assets. Snowdrop gives some phenomenal flexibility to an environment artist. You can manipulate all the elements of the scene on the fly, changing the weather, the time of day, iterating and working with assets. Very interesting stuff. It’s amazing how much story is created on the spot through the environment design.
We really hope to feature an interview with Jeremy in the future. Meanwhile, follow him on YouTube!
