Pixologic has presented ZBrush 2021.5, the new version of the popular sculpting tool.
The version will be available later this year featuring a set of new tools designed for adding surface detail, including a new Thick Skin system for tweaking the surface layer of a sculpt. It will also bring updates to ZModeler, Sculptris Pro, object manipulation, and rendering.
The update will allow users to mimick surface effects possible in traditional sculpting, including the real clay effect. There is also Thick Skin, a new system that lets artists replicate oil-based clay with a heat source to slide details.
Sculpting is said to be confined to the surface layer of a model, so it doesn't change underlying geometry. You can add surface detail, then do it all over again. Pixologic states that this new way will allow you to achieve claylike surface textures. You can also add wrinkles to characters, scales to creatures, and more.
Please note that the new feature works with any standard ZBrush brush, alpha, and stroke type, and you can also tweak the thickness of the sculpting layer.
