About the role

We’re looking for an experienced 3D technical animator focused on Unreal to drive the realism, complexity, and diversity of the animations used to generate synthetic data in our simulation tools. These animations ensure that humans, vehicles, and other actors in the simulation closely represent the real world while also having the diversity required to avoid overfitting machine learning models trained on the synthetic data.

At Applied, you will be responsible for the technical development of animation systems within Unreal and the pipelines associated with it. You will create an animation system that supports adapting a large variety of animations at runtime, to encompass the realism, complexity, and diversity of the animations the real world. This position will join an existing team of talented engineers and artists with backgrounds in gaming, feature films, autonomous systems, and robotics. Learn more about creating simulations for autonomous vehicles here.

At Applied, you will:

  • Create systems to drive realistic animations of humans executing complex actions, including entering/exiting vehicles, using phones, and biking as well as support realistic animations of animals walking, running, and flying
  • Design a system that permutes animations to increase diversity while maintaining realism
  • Adapt animations to various constraints, changing stride lengths, interacting with objects etc.

We're looking for someone who has:

  • Experience with game/realtime animation systems
  • Animation systems, as we cannot create unique animations for everything so breaking down the work into steps and phases is crucial
  • Is an expert user of at least one 3D DCC tool (e.g. Maya/Houdini)
  • Has strong experience with Unreal Engine or equivalent

Nice to have:

  • Experience with a game that has people entering/exiting vehicles
  • Experience with building procedural animation systems
  • Experience with rigging
  • Experience with animation blending
  • Experience with Unreal Engine and Animation Blueprints
